DOG Magazine

A fashion magazine that delves deep into the enigmatic world of Hollywood, uncovering the mysterious capture of Sam by an Illuminati-esque cult, based on the film Under the Silver Lake (2018).

The Brief

A movie aims to promote their film, and partners with a fashion house to create a fashion magazine feature. Reimagine a pre-existing film by by introducing a bold creative twist, using visual storytelling through design elements such as costuming, custom typography and overall creative direction.
The cult’s DOG magazine visually chronicles Under The Silver Lake (2018) Sam’s imprisonment and escape from the secretive organization he sought to investigate, using high-fashion costuming and experimental layout design to mirror his psychological unraveling. Through avant-garde styling, fragmented layout design, and surreal editorial spreads, the magazine explores the the search for meaning– even when there might not be one.

The Process

The film repeatedly examines themes of inauthenticity. One scene, in particular, stood out to me—Sam attends an exclusive LA party filled with celebrities and artists dressed in their finest attire, yet he arrives in pajama pants and a T-shirt. A partygoer casually remarks, "I like your shirt," despite its obvious filth and lack of sophistication. This moment encapsulates the idea that luxury fashion is often dictated by perception rather than intrinsic value—it is the illusion of wealth we have all come to recognize.
This scene served as the foundation for my approach to costume design, reimagining the quintessential all-American uniform of a T-shirt and jeans, which Sam wears throughout the film. Streetwear brands continuously reinvent this look, elevating it through branding and pricing while ultimately maintaining the same essential garment. By deconstructing and reconstructing these elements, I aimed to challenge the notion of authenticity in fashion, mirroring the film’s broader themes of illusion, power, and identity.
